Parliament Speaker on Bundestag meetings: Europe should be space from Lisbon to Tbilisi
During their visit to Germany, the Georgian parliamentary delegation met with the president of the Bundestag, Berbel Bas, as well as the chairs of the European Affairs, Legal Affairs, and Defense Committees.
“At all meetings, the main spirit was felt. This is the spirit that our population recently heard from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz when he said that Europe should be a space from Lisbon to Tbilisi. All the representatives of the Bundestag and all the factions feel that Georgia is a part of Europe, therefore Georgia’s accession to the European Union is a decision that will definitely be implemented,” said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
According to the Speaker, during discussions with top political leaders in Germany’s capital, the host party favourably appraised Georgia’s efforts toward EU membership, reaffirming that Germany supports Georgia’s bid for EU candidate status.
“We talked about the importance of a strong political decision next year when it comes to deciding on candidate status. As for the technical parameters and various criteria required for the status, Georgia certainly meets these criteria. We have 12 more recommendations that are being worked on. We will do our best to finish this work as soon as possible. Then, we can expect the European Union to evaluate our work and make an appropriate decision,” Shalva Papashvili said.
