Parliament Speaker hopes EU recognises Georgia's efforts and grants it candidate status
Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said that the European Commission would start assessing Georgia’s progress in the fulfilment of the 12-point recommendations in February. He expressed hope that the EU would recognize progress and assign the country a candidate status.
Presenting the 2022 annual report and the 2023 action plan of the supreme legislative body to the lawmakers at the plenary sitting, Papuashvili noted that the advancement of Georgia’s security and socioeconomic development would set the agenda of the Georgian Parliament in 2023.
“In this regard, taking into account the already significant tangible results, the positive sector report published by the European Commission on February 3, 2023, and the measures planned towards European integration this year, I hope this time Georgia’s efforts will be fully recognised and the European Union will grant us candidate country status.
Thus, the priority that will determine the agenda of the Georgian Parliament in 2023 will be further progress towards European Union membership, institutional strengthening of the Parliament, and advancement of Georgia’s security and socioeconomic development. I believe that our joint efforts will yield significant results that will further strengthen our country’s peaceful, economically strong, stable, and European future,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
