Parliament endorses open vote election of Public Defender

The Parliament passed the proposal to elect a Public Defender by open balloting in the third reading with 104 votes in favour on Thursday.

Levan Ioseliani, an MP of the parliamentary opposition Citizens Party, started the amendment, saying it would safeguard the process’s transparency and inclusivity.

Ioseliani went on to say that secret balloting raised the prospect of a hidden arrangement between the government and the opposition.

“I believe a politician should not be afraid to speak openly about his decision and should be able to answer questions about why he supports or opposes particular candidates. It is critical for the people to understand which politicians back which candidates,” Levan Ioseliani said.

The Parliament speedily debated the open vote initiative to create a legislative basis before the time of the Public Defender’s election.
