Orthodox Church observes Holy Thursday

The Orthodox Church celebrates Holy Thursday today, which is related to the establishment of the Sacrament of Holy Communion. According to the Gospel, the Lord gave the disciples the Holy Communion for the first time on this day, establishing the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

This day falls on the Thursday before Easter, commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles.

The service is being conducted at all active churches across Georgia, followed by the feet-washing ritual.

The tradition is a symbolic re-enactment of the Gospel episode in which Christ washed the disciples’ feet. It is a symbol of love and modesty.
