Opposition MP Akubaria deems OSCE/ODIHR opinion on transparency law as "cold shower" for GD

Opposition MP Teona Akubardia remarked on the OSCE/ODIHR opinion on the Transparency law and said it would be sent to the Strasbourg-based court and “judicially forced” to be repealed.

“First we received the opinion from the Venice Commission, reading this law should be annulled since it contradicted international law and fundamental rights. Last night, we received yet another critical opinion, which exposed the Georgian Dream of lies.

In its 30-page opinion, the OSCE/ODIHR calls on the government to withdraw the law and take steps to bring it in line with international standards. It is a cold shower for the Georgian Dream. I hope this opinion, likewise, the one of the Venice Commission, will be submitted to the Strasbourg Court and serve the judicial ground to annul the law,” she said.

According to Teona Akubardia, the “Russian Law” is compatible neither with American nor Australian laws as the GD remarked in the explanation note.

The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) on May 30 published its opinion on Georgia’s newly approved law On Transparency of Foreign Influence, saying the law contains “serious deficiencies that make it incompatible with international human rights standards and the country’s commitments as an OSCE state, and it should be rescinded.”
