Olympic Qualification: Georgia to face Philippines in bid to advance from group stage
The Georgian basketball team will play their second match in the Olympic qualification stage against the Philippines in Riga. The game will begin today, July 4, at 16:30. The GPB First Channel and Georgian Radio will live-transmit the match.
In Group A, there are three teams: Georgia, Latvia, and the Philippines. Two teams from the group will advance to the semi-finals. Georgia lost their first match to Latvia with a score of 55:83. On the second day, the Philippines defeated Latvia 80:89. Due to this outcome, Georgia must now win against the Philippines by 19 or more points to advance to the semi-finals.
Six countries are competing for an Olympic spot in Riga: Latvia, Georgia, the Philippines (Group A), and Brazil, Montenegro, and Cameroon (Group B). Similar qualifying tournaments with six teams each are being held in Puerto Rico, Spain, and Greece, each offering one ticket to the Olympics.
In each location, the teams are divided into two groups. After one round of group play, the top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be played using a cross system: A1 vs B2 and B1 vs A2. The winner of the final will secure a spot in the Olympics.
In Group B, Brazil defeated Montenegro 81:72 in the opening match, and Montenegro then beat Cameroon 70:66. Brazil will play against Cameroon today at 20:00.
