No lab-confirmed Omicron reinfection cases recorded in Georgia, NCDC Head says
Georgia has not recorded laboratory-confirmed Omicron reinfection cases so far, but “theoretically, anything is possible,” as Omicron has several sub-strains, the Head of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Amiran Gamkrelidze, said on Monday.
Gamkrelidze mentioned a particular study, suggesting that the Omicron does not leave immunity for a long time. He stressed the importance of the vaccination, mainly the booster dose to avoid infection, hospitalization and fatal outcome.
NCDC Deputy Head, Paata Imnadze, noted that, in general, there are many reinfection cases among those who previously contracted the Delta variant. There is a probability that Omicron-recovered people may get other sub-variant of Omicron.” Imnadze urged citizens to get jabbed, stressing that unvaccinated people face a risk to develop severe forms of infection.
Earlier today, Georgia reported 4,028 coronavirus cases, 22,517 recoveries, and 21 deaths on February 14. However, Gamkrelidze said that “today’s figures do not reflect the whole picture as due to technical works, full data could not be uploaded.”
