Nino Lomjaria: There may be some in Brussels who believe holding violent elections in Georgia or tolerating vote secrecy violations acceptable; these are not normal cases
“All the [election observation] missions we met told us that they have no questions about the scale of the violations,” said Nino Lomjaria, founder of NGO “European Orbit of Georgia,” noting that the information acquired by observation missions suggests that the elections were “highly problematic.”
When asked if there was enough evidence for the mission to examine, Lomjaria responded, “There is more than enough evidence to assess these elections as unfair, unfree, and where voting secrecy was violated.”
Her remark follows the article by Europe Editor of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, Rikard Jozwiak, saying “Part of the problem for EU officials is that there isn’t really a smoking gun when it comes to accusations of widespread fraud.”
“For some reason, we have become accustomed to it, or maybe there, in Brussels, in certain circles, there is such an opinion that it is acceptable, for example, to have violent elections in Georgia, or that we should tolerate physical violence, voting secrecy violations of voter bribery. These are not normal cases.
We cannot look at Georgia and its elections in such a way that some things are permitted here but not acceptable in other European countries.
We also deserve fair elections, enjoy the same rights and demand the same standard from our elections as any democratic country,” she stated.
