“Georgian sailor was kidnapped by pirates,“- The Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia confirmed the information.

As official statement reads, the attack resulted in the kidnapping of four of the ship’s 24 crew members. Of the kidnapped crewmen, one is Greek, one Georgian and two are Filipino nationals.

“The ship is currently standing in the port of Lome in Togo. For further details, we contacted the shipping company via the International Transport Organization (ITF). The representative of shipping company confirmed the fact that  Georgian citizen is kidnapped. As he added, they are working on the release of kidnapped crew members.

The Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are working together in all possible ways to safely free Georgian sailor from captivity.

We have already contacted family members. However, due to the safety of Georgian sailor, it is important not to spread his identifying information,”- the statement said.
