“The Georgian Dream (GD) party goes against the LGBTQ+ community,” said independent MP Teona Akubardia, remarking on the ruling team-initiated legislative package.
According to Akubardia, the GD party gradually limited the right to freedom of expression and imposed the law about tents, fearing alleged revolution attempts.
Teona Akubardia believes that the GD’s main interest is to rule the country with authoritarian methods in the same way as it happened in Russia following the adoption of Russian law.
“This is simply an authoritarian way, which they attempt to sell in society. The society did not buy it and it is obvious. I will not participate in discussions. Therefore, the GD will be left alone with its invented reality, which it wanted to have with this law,” she said.
“Georgia’s ruling party has proposed legislation to roll back LGBTQ+ rights. This package would violate the right to freedom of assembly and passage of such law would further undermine confidence in the Georgian government’s commitment to democracy,” said Senator Ben Cardin.
