MIA apprehends suspect in ex-MP Givi Targamadze attempted murder case
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has apprehended a man, born in 1974, who was wanted for the attempted murder of Givi Targamadze, a former MP of the Parliament of Georgia, Deputy Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze stated at a recent briefing.
Darakhvelidze reported that D.Kh. illegally crossed the Georgian border via the so-called “green border.”
“On September 19, 2024, he was detected by surveillance technology in the border region while entering Georgia from Turkey. The border police stopped him for inspection.
Upon being halted, D.Kh. failed to present any identification and attempted to mislead officers by providing a false name. However, the border police conducted an initial identification and confirmed his identity using MIA databases. D.Kh. has been wanted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs since 2016 and by Interpol since 2017 for offences including attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms.
Following a court verdict from March 22, 2019, D.Kh. was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
He was subsequently taken to a penal facility by the border police.
The investigation into the attempted murder of Givi Targamadze is ongoing at the Tbilisi Police Department, where efforts continue to identify and apprehend additional individuals involved in the crime,” Darakhvelidze stated.
