MFA: PM's invitation to U.S. with agreement to temporarily suspend Transparency Bill discussion does not reflect partnership spirit

“Georgian Prime Minister [Irakli Kobakhidze] was invited to the U.S. with the agreement that before the visit, the Georgian Parliament would temporarily suspend the debate on a draft bill “on the transparency of foreign influence,” the country’s Foreign Ministry has said.

“Today, the U.S. ambassador’s statement was issued, stating that high-ranking Georgian government officials were invited to the U.S., but the Georgian side declined. In this respect, we would like to explain that the Georgian Prime Minister was invited to the United States with the condition that, prior to the visit, the Georgian Parliament would temporarily halt discussion of the draft bill “on the transparency of foreign influence”. Meetings with arrangements do not embody the spirit of partnership, which should be founded on mutual respect and trust.”

The MFA added that a full explanation was delivered to the U.S. ambassador [Robin Dunnigan].
