The executive secretary of the Georgian Dream (GD) party, Mamuka Mdinaradze, said the Georgian Dream may receive 90-91 seats in parliament. He expects the results to improve.
“We are expecting a little improvement on these results. It may be about 90-91 mandates, if not more. It would have been very important to overcome one less party [reaching the threshold], for example, if that 8% had hypothetically remained undistributed, we could have easily managed this, but apparently, the agent parties and their masters calculated this well – that if Gakharia’s party managed to parasitize on Georgian Dream’s votes, then the chance of a 100-mandate advantage would disappear. Unfortunately, they managed that, but fortunately, Georgia can’t be ruled by agent parties and the Georgian Dream and the Georgian people won, for which I extend my deepest gratitude once again,” he added.
As per the Central Election Commission (CEC)’s preliminary data, Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia received 53,06% of votes (955 622), followed by Coalition for Change / Gvaramia, Melia, Girchi, Droa – 11.7% (201 275), Unity – National Movement – 9.94 % (177 349), Strong Georgia – Lelo, for People, for Liberty – 8.99% (162 056) and Gakharia for Georgia – 8.22% (148 007). In total, four opposition parties secured 38,22% of votes.
Georgia held parliamentary elections under a new fully proportional system, with voters set to elect all 150 members of parliament in a single round of voting.
The parties must secure at least 5% of the total vote to gain parliamentary representation. Eighteen political parties and coalitions are vying for seats in this race.
