Lelo's Khazaradze: Georgia’s political discourse shifts from serious debate to labelling and insults on Facebook

“In Georgia, many believe that the political process has shifted away from meaningful dialogue toward petty labelling and personal insults on Facebook. This toxic environment is the root of our current challenges,” Mamuka Khazaradze, leader of the Lelo party, said in an interview with one of the media outlets.

According to Khazaradze, a serious and well-reasoned discussion among the four coalitions is now essential.

“I call on everyone — the situation is challenging. Let us channel our energy, strength, and knowledge into constructive and rational debate. We must learn from the mistakes of the opposition in the past—mistakes that enabled Bidzina Ivanishvili to hold power for 13 years.

We must present a united front. The format of the four coalitions reflects the election results and has the support of the president, who continues to call for new elections and the release of political prisoners—demands that remain entirely valid.

Should we boycott or participate in the upcoming elections? We have made our stance clear. We are on the front lines and committed to actively joining the fight. We believe that achieving new elections and securing the release of political prisoners will be more attainable if we also defeat the government in local elections. Five cities have already been won, though that’s a topic for further discussion—others may see it differently. Currently, we are engaging with the mothers of political prisoners, activists on Rustaveli Avenue, and citizens committed to fostering a normal, constructive dialogue.

When I refer to the format, I mean continuing what was initiated last year—the cooperation between parties that signed the agreement and formed the four coalitions that won the elections. Our goal is to carry on within that framework.

Unfortunately, only our coalition and a few parties from the others are participating now. Three coalitions are currently absent. I sincerely hope this format can be restored and a unified front established,” said Mamuka Khazaradze.
