Legal Affairs Committee Chair calls for Saakashvili's return to penitentiary institution
During a plenary session, Anri Okhanashvili, the chair of the Legal Affairs Committee, stated that Mikheil Saakashvili [Georgia’s jailed ex-president] should be returned to a penitentiary institution.
Okhanashvili argued that Saakashvili should not be in a clinic.
“We heard statements that the leader of the united opposition, Nika Melia, is a criminal as he intended to attack state institutions and breach the parliament building, but he should not be punished.
These individuals betrayed the Constitution, resigned, and now discuss moral values with us. This is why we did not endorse their statements and also the EU countries’ protest notes alleging that Saakashvili was a victim of torture.
By the way, Saakashvili withdrew a lawsuit, claiming his health is in good condition. The Justice Ministry took care of him. His dementia was cured, which is unprecedented in Georgia and globally.
Therefore, he should return to the penitentiary institution where he belongs. He no longer needs to remain in the clinic,” he stated.
