Justice Minister: NGOs can monitor elections; political activity requires forming a union
The Georgian Justice Minister, Rati Bregadze, emphasized the distinction between political parties and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the context of the election process. He clarified that political parties are directly involved in campaigning, while NGOs are allowed to observe election processes and neutrally encourage citizens to participate in elections.
“There is a clear distinction between the roles of political parties and NGOs. If representatives of an NGO wish to engage in political activities or participate in elections, they can legally form a political union, as guaranteed by the Georgian constitution. This distinction between political parties and NGOs must be properly upheld by all participants in the political process” Bregadze stated.
