The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation into threats made against the Public Defender via the internet, – Ministry of Internal Affairs released this statement.
“On June 14, 2019, during the demonstration underway in front of the Governmental Administration, 28 counter-demonstrators were detained by police. In addition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an investigation under Article 154 of the Criminal Code of Georgia in connection with interference with the journalistic activities during the demonstration. Investigation has also been launched in connection with the threatening messages against the Public Defender released via the internet under Article 151 of the Criminal Code.
All necessary investigative and procedural actions will be conducted within the investigation.
During the various rallies planned for the coming days, Ministry of Internal Affairs will protect the right of assembly and freedom of expression of each citizen notwithstanding their political views, religious belief, sexual orientation and any other signs, if freedom of expression does not exceed legal permissible limits. Ministry urges the participants of the rallies to act in accordance with the law. Otherwise, police will act within its mandate and every unlawful action will be immediately prevented”, – the statement reads.
