Interior Minister sees rallies as peaceful, while some protesters as aggressive towards police
“The protest rallies were peaceful, but some protesters were aggressive, throwing various objects at the police,” said Georgian Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri, reporting to the Parliament in interpellation rule.
The Minister said that five police officers were injured, including two who were taken to the hospital. Law enforcers detained 40 individuals under administrative law.
“This week, we have seen law enforcers working non-stop and mobilized at different places and times at the rallies to protect security simultaneously with legislative work on April 15-16.
“For the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it was important to ensure security of both the lawmakers and protesters. Society saw how a peaceful protest has transformed into violent activities from the first day. While the protest rally was peaceful in general, some protesters were aggressive toward law enforcers and threw different objects at the police, including stones, bottles, and paints. They verbally and physically assaulted them and disobeyed their lawful orders. As a result of violent activities, five police officers were injured, including two who were taken to the hospital. Forty individuals were detained on administrative charges,” he said.
