Interior Minister says assault of police as unaccepted as attack on state institution

“The confrontation between citizens and police looked bad for everyone, including me,” said Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri during an interpellation at the parliament.

According to Gomelauri, although the police called for peace, some forces attempted to escalate the situation and applied all methods.

“The police constantly called on the protest organizers for peace, but we understand that some forces wanted to escalate the situation and applied different methods. On April 16 night, when the protest was coming to an end, the protest participants verbally and physically assaulted police officers and insulted their family members. The confrontation between citizens and police looked bad for everyone, including me. But I can clearly say that assaults of law enforcers caused the conflict. Attacking a police officer means attacking a state institution and is unacceptable,” he said.
