HR committee discusses bill on DNA database

The Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration Committee has reviewed a draft law to set up a DNA database in Georgia.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze explained that the law will create a legal framework for the database, managed by the National Bureau of Forensic Expertise.

The database aims to aid crime prevention, detection, and the identification of missing persons. It will include genetic profiles from accused/convicted individuals, crime scenes, and voluntarily submitted profiles.

The law also permits the exchange of genetic data with international organizations. The draft law, backed by the committee, is a government initiative.
