GYLA Chairman – zero-percent threshold reflects voters’ will in best way
The zero-percent election threshold reflects the voters’ free will in the best way in the supreme legislative body – Sulkhan Saladze, Chairman of the non-governmental organization Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) said.
According to Saladze, the sooner political parties agree on the type of proportional electoral system, the better for the country and Georgia’s democratic environment.
The leadership of the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia Party initiated constitutional changes for holding fully proportional parliamentary elections in 2020 with a zero-percent election threshold.
Georgian political parties welcomed the initiative. EU Ambassadors also approved the proposed idea saying that transformation onto a proportional system will help to eradicate election shortcomings in Georgia.
