Group of physicians to daily report on ex-president’s health, Justice Minister says
A group of physicians will report on ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s health daily to eliminate disinformation, said Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze.
According to Bregadze, through cooperation with Justice Ministry, the penitentiary system invited another group of physicians to monitor Mikheil Saakashvili’s health.
“I would make it clear that there has been no single case when Saakashvili was not provided medical assistance since his arrest. Authorities transferred the prisoner from N12 Rustavi prison to the Gldani N18 prison infirmary due to health state worsening, security reasons and with the purpose to avoid complications,” Bregadze said.
Justice Minister claimed the prison infirmary fully meets the requirements concerning infrastructure and staff to ensure efficient control of the prisoner’s health, both during the hunger strike and post-hunger recovery period. Rati Bregadze also called on society to refrain from spreading disinformation.
Justice Minister denied the allegation about the non-admission of the Medical Council members in the prison infirmary. He added his ministry initiated the establishment of the Council, which would be appealed for additional recommendations if needed. “We will act based on best interests of the patient’s health,” Bregadze claimed.
Justice Minister also clarified about the admission of visitors, saying those who had no right to enter the penitentiary facility based on the Georgian law were rejected to visit Mikheil Saakashvili. Bregadze underlined that the Public Defender, MPs, private physician, and family members could attend the prisoner.
Previously, Ukrainian Public Defender and MEP Anna Fotyga did not get permission to see Mikheil Saakashvili at the N18 Gldani prison infirmary.
Law enforcers arrested Mikheil Saakashvili in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on October 1. He has been on a hunger strike since the very first day of his arrest.
