The Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) and the State Language Department signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to eliminate common blunders and barbarisms in the media and to remedy them with Georgian synonyms.

Tinatin Berdzenishvili, Director General of the Georgian Public Broadcaster, stressed the importance of preserving and enhancing the Georgian language in broadcast media, stating that the GPB First Channel is actively trying to improve the broadcasting language.

“We signed a memorandum of cooperation today. We had previously held working sessions. We often discussed the value of spoken language for journalists, producers, and audiences. We have created certain methods for improving the broadcast language on our radio and television channels. We are initiating active work and will keep the general public updated on the progress,” Berdzenishvili added.

The Chair of the State Language Department, Giorgi Alibegashvili, highlighted the need for signing the MoC with the GPB to preserve the state language.

“Everyone is aware of our state language’s difficulties. Obviously, we need support. This is an issue for the entire society, not just one institution. The entire society should be concerned about our language, and television’s engagement is particularly welcome,” he observed.

The State Language Department is developing a portal for several undertakings, including an etymological dictionary, as Giorgi Alibegashvili explained, having lauded the GPB’s active participation in this process.
