Gov’t to act based on two principles, strong support to Ukraine and inadmissibility of war, Parliament Speaker says
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said that Georgia, on the one hand, demonstrates solidarity to Ukraine and strong support to the Ukrainian people, but on the other, acts based on the principle of the inadmissibility of war.
“Our main tool, compared to other countries, is political support, perhaps because we have a difficult economic situation, our humanitarian aid may not be as huge as the humanitarian aid of Western countries.
We may not be able to accept as many refugees as the territorially larger states can, but we have the same voice in international forums like the United States or other big countries.
Our political support is as valuable as any other big country, medium or small, so the main weapon and the tool we have is the political support we demonstrate,” Shalva Papuashvili said.
Parliament Speaker further clarified that it was not easy to impose sanctions, even for the West. He also claimed that Georgia could not engage in the work formally, though there was a threat to involve Georgia in the military hostilities.
Papuashvili also welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s address to different nations, including Georgians, scheduled for this evening.
“As far as I know, he wants to address the world and different nations to thank them for solidarity. Georgia and the Georgian people stand with Ukraine and I am glad if he wishes to express gratitude for that,” Papuashvili said.
