Iago Khvichia, a leader of the Girchi party, criticized the Coalition for Changes leader Nika Gvaramia’s proposal to set up protest tents, suggesting it could stifle public protest.
Khvichia emphasized the need for a well-defined, compelling demand.
“This initiative will stifle public protest by isolating it in tents,” Khvichia remarked. “First, the right demand must be formulated, then people can be encouraged to take to the streets in support of it. Sandro [Girchi member] and I are debating in the office whether the organizers are bribed or simply stupid. It’s difficult to say, and our views vary, but the conclusion seems to be one of these two.”
Khvichia also stressed that proving to both the public and international partners that election secrecy was compromised should be prioritized.
“First and foremost, it is important to communicate and demonstrate to many people, including international partners, that the secrecy of the elections has been violated. We need to clearly formulate the right demands and mobilize the people to take to the streets in support of these demands. Once the people are out on the streets with a clear purpose, it will be up to them to decide how to proceed,” he added.
The comments follow Nika Gvaramia’s recent call on social media for tents to support ongoing protests.
