Giorgi Margvelashvili: I welcome the shutdown of Mindeli Mine until investigation is over and the fact that employees will be fully compensated
It is necessary to tighten the safety rules and implement high standards, – President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili released a statement regarding the Tkibuli mine tragic incident.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident of Mindeli Mine and express my sincere condolences to the family members and relatives of the victims.
We have been highlighting that labor safety conditions are unacceptable for several years. It is necessary to tighten the rules and implement high standards.
In total, 11 people dead and 10 injured is an alarming number indicating the fact that the state is unable to adequately respond to similar cases.
I welcome the shutdown of Mindeli Mine until the criminal investigation and highly qualified international engineering and technical expertise are over. Meanwhile, employees will be fully compensated.
The major question remains unanswered – will workers be able to resume their work safely in Mindeli Mine? Everybody should take responsibility for this and take effective steps to ensure protection of the right to life at work,” – President Margvelashvili’s statement reads.
