In 2023, there were 194 active economic agents organizing markets in Georgia. 30.4% of them were located in Tbilisi, 19.1% in the Imereti region, 13.4% in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, 11.9% in the Kakheti region, 8.8% in Kvemo Kartli, 5.1% in Adjara, 4.6% in Shida Kartli, 2.1% in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, 2.1% in Samtskhe-Javakheti, 1.5% in Guria, and 1.0% in the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region, the National Statistics Office of Georgia reported.

According to Geostat, the most common legal form for these economic agents was Limited Liability Company, representing 76.3% of the total. Individual Entrepreneurs made up 20.6%, while other legal forms such as Joint Stock Company, Cooperative, and Joint Liability Company each represented less than 2% of the total.

95.9 percent of markets were privately owned, and the remaining 4.1% were owned by the state. In total, the economic agents occupied 2.0 million square meters of area. The markets were equipped with 68 vet laboratories, 1291 storage facilities with a total area of 28.6 thousand square meters, and 358 cold storage units with a total capacity of 0.7 thousand tons.

In terms of structure, 35.0% of the active markets were roofed, 35.6% were open-type, and 29.4% were semi-roofed. They traded in food and non-food goods, with 30.4% of markets trading only non-food goods, and others specializing in cars, poultry, and livestock.

The number of trading days varied, with daily trade taking place in 147 markets, Sunday trade in 23 markets, and different arrangements for others throughout the week. The markets collectively offered 51.8 thousand places for trade, with an average of 37.4 thousand sellers per day.

In 2023, the administration of these economic agents employed 2.7 thousand people, 34.5% of whom were female, with 45.8% based in Tbilisi. Their total income was 176.9 million GEL, with the majority of it (86.6%) coming from renting out trade stands. Expenditures amounted to 108.9 million GEL, with 36.5 million GEL spent on employee salaries.
