Georgian sportsman Levan Gorgadze became the winner of the Emperor’s Cup, thus gaining the title of the best Sumoist.

Gorgadze (known in the sumo community as Tochinoshin) claimed a win against fellow competitor Ichinojo, keeping his lead in the standings.
The Georgian-born athlete first took the lead in January competition, also known as The Emperor’s Cup, after his win against Tamawashi on Thursday, combined with a loss for his principal opponent Kakuryu.

The 30-year old would become the first Georgian wrestler to win the competition, recognized as the most prestigious in sumo and usually dominated by local athletes.

Levan Gorgadze won a tournament in Japan. The 14th round of the tournament was held today, where the Georgian defeated Shōhazan of Japan and gained victory in the important match.

Born in Mtskheta, Georgia, Gorgadze has competed in 71 basho tournaments in sumo since 2006. He has won three Juryo Division Championships and two Makushita Division Championships.

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili congratulated Georgian Suomist Levan Gorgadze on victory.

“Congratulations, Georgian Sumoist Levan Gorgadze has become the owner of the Emperor’s Cup in Japan! Levan is the first Georgian and 3rd European who managed to win this award. Congratulations, we are a proud of you!”- Prime Minister said.
