Georgian President pledges to start reconciliation process

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said she took responsibility to kick off “a process of reconciliation, truth and justice.” “This is the path many countries have taken before and which is paramount for Georgia today.”

In an interview with France 24, the President, asked about Georgia’s 2021 local race, stressed that the election administration and the electoral reform, carried out under ODIHR recommendations, “yielded results, and administration of the polls was appreciated.”

“The important thing is not whether the election went badly or not, but that we remain in extreme polarization despite the elections and Charles Michel’s efforts,” she noted.

Asked about Georgia’s jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s recent moves, Zourabichvili deemed his return to Georgia “irresponsible,” saying his “illegal” entry into the country “flares political instability, which is not necessary.”
