Georgian PM's Adviser: We affirm the universal aspiration for equality
“Equality for all is first and foremost. We affirm the universal aspiration for equality,” Georgian Prime Minister’s Adviser Lela Akiashvili has echoed the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia today.
As Lela Akiashvili wrote on Facebook, “Georgian legislation is in line with European legislation in forbidding discrimination and guaranteeing equality for all. Today, our goal is to ensure the right to equality in practice, including sexual, ethnic, and religious minorities.”
“Article 11 of the Constitution of Georgia states, “All persons are equal before the law. Any discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, sex, origin, ethnicity, language, religion, political or other views, social affiliation, property or titular status, place of residence, or on any other grounds shall be prohibited.”
Upholding the principles of the Constitution is a duty for all of us. Moreover, we recognize the importance of protecting the right to equality for the wellbeing and prosperity of the country.
Each of our citizens has a right to live in an equal and violence-free community,” PM’s Adviser stressed.
The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is observed on May 17 and aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of LGBT rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work worldwide.
