The European Council’s decision to grant EU membership perspective to Georgia and the close partnership between the two countries were the key topics discussed during today’s meeting between Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Irakli Garibashvili thanked Péter Szijjártó for clearly endorsing the EU membership candidate status for Georgia, also emphasizing his gratitude to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for his principled position, the government has said.

The Head of Government underlined that the European Commission’s opinion on Georgia’s European perspective has been made official, and based on the European Commission’s recommendation, the European Council reaffirmed it.

According to the Prime Minister, the Government of Georgia continues working on every reform on the Association Agenda and will finalize every obligation assumed in the direction of democratic reforms.

Irakli Garibashvili thanked Péter Szijjártó for supporting Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. In response, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary reaffirmed firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and for the country’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

The meeting also emphasized the successful cooperation between Georgia and Hungary across a variety of areas, with the parties expressing commitment to furthering this partnership, the government noted.
