Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has congratulated “our Jewish fellow citizens, our brothers who have returned to their historical homeland, Israel, and the Jewish people around the world on Hanukkah.”
In his Facebook post, the PM went on to say that “It is our responsibility, today’s generations, to further strengthen our brotherhood, to deepen the cooperation between Georgia and Israel.”
The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games, and gifts.
