Georgian FM Darchiashvili highlights strategic partnership with Azerbaijan
During a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, who is visiting Georgia, Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili discussed the bilateral agenda, regional issues, and current global events.
In a joint statement with Bayramov, Darchiashvili emphasized that Georgia and Azerbaijan respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He highlighted the importance of peace and stability in the region as a key topic of their discussions.
“Georgia and Azerbaijan are actively and successfully cooperating in various formats, including within the framework of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership initiative. This initiative aims to implement joint projects with the European Union, particularly in the fields of energy and transport, as well as in fostering cooperation among Eastern Partnership countries,” said Darchiashvili.
He reiterated Georgia’s long-standing support for peaceful coexistence in the South Caucasus, a commitment that has been demonstrated repeatedly.
“The Republic of Azerbaijan is not only a good friend for us but also a reliable strategic partner. Together, we have initiated and are successfully implementing several strategically important projects that have significantly enhanced the role and function of our region. I am confident that in the future, the attractiveness and functionality of our region will continue to grow, contributing to the increased connectivity between the West and the East. One of these mega-projects is the underwater cable for electricity transmission, which is very significant. We welcome the completion of the reconstruction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and its full operation. The increase in cargo transportation on this line will provide a substantial boost to this corridor and significantly contribute to enhancing the functionality of the middle corridor. It is noteworthy that Azerbaijan has been among Georgia’s top five trade partners in recent years,” Darchiashvili stated.
