Georgian and Slovenian Parliament Presidents discuss bilateral ties, EU integration

The Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, hosted the President of the National Assembly of Slovenia, Urška Klakočar Zupančič, in a meeting where they discussed various aspects of bilateral relations and Georgia’s path toward European Union (EU) integration.

Papuashvili expressed gratitude for Slovenia’s vigorous support for Georgia’s aspirations to join the EU and NATO. The discussion covered topics such as Georgia’s progress on the EU and NATO integration path, bilateral relations, and regional security challenges.

Following a meeting, Klakočar Zupančič praised Georgia’s efforts to reduce political polarization and enhance the independence of state institutions. She expressed support for Georgia’s reforms and its journey towards EU accession. Slovenia, known for endorsing EU enlargement, considers European integration a key strategy to address contemporary global challenges.

“Slovenia understands Georgia’s geopolitical challenges, particularly in its relationship with Russia, so it is especially important for Georgia to become a member of the European family,” she added.

Zupančič encouraged Georgia to persist in its current path and expressed optimism about the country’s future. Zupančič expressed her hope to return to personally congratulate Georgia when it achieves candidate status for EU membership.

During the briefing following the meeting, Papuashvili reiterated the significance of positive statements from Slovenia regarding Georgia’s progress and support for its European future. He expressed appreciation for Slovenia’s unwavering support and highlighted the value of such backing for Georgia.

“We often hear positive statements from Slovenia regarding Georgia’s progress and support for the European future. Such support is valuable for Georgia,” he said.

The discussion also touched upon Georgia’s implementation of EU recommendations, indicating ongoing collaboration between the two countries.
