Italy's President says Georgia-Italy bilateral relations and historic friendship continue to develop

Based on historical friendship, bilateral relations between Italy and Georgia constantly develop, said Italian President Sergio Mattarella at the joint briefing with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili.

President Mattarella said Italy recognized Georgia’s independence first in 1921 and later in 1992.

“Tbilisi and Rome share the joint international policy of condemning wars, respecting peaceful coexistence and territorial integrity and sovereignty,” Sergio Mattarella said.

According to the Italian President, Russia’s aggression against Georgia in 2008 and its recognition of the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions intensified Europe’s partnership with Georgia to maintain peace in this region. President Mattarella further claimed that Georgia was a part of the European civilization.

“Georgia has the centuries-old experience, and it is absolutely logical and understandable that it wants to become a full member of Europe. Italy supports Georgia’s aspiration,” Sergio Mattarella stated.
