Georgia defeats Poland 2:1 in U21 Euro opener

The Georgian national team faced Poland in the opening match of the European Youth Championship and secured a 2:1 victory.

The match took place at Žilina Stadium, where the Georgians were missing three key central defenders—Saba Goglichidze, Luka Latsabidze, and Nikoloz Ugrekhelidze—just days before the tournament began. In their absence, head coach Ramaz Svanadze included Saba Sazonov in the starting lineup, despite his long absence from the field.

The first half ended goalless. In the 55th minute, following a corner kick, a Polish defender failed to clear the ball, allowing Nodar Lominadze to score with a powerful strike from close range. In the 73rd minute, Poland equalized after being awarded a penalty, which Jakub Kałuziński converted.

Vasilios Gordeziani scored in the 90+4th minute to finish off a Georgian counterattack, securing Georgia’s first win of the tournament and all three points.

In the other Group A match, France and Portugal played to a goalless draw (0:0), placing Georgia at the top of the group after the first round.

Georgia will play their next match against France on June 14.
