At the press conference, Willy Sagnol, head coach of the Georgian national team, evaluated the round of 16 match against Spain at Euro 2024.
Sagnol expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “I am very proud of what the Georgian players have done.” However, he voiced concerns about Spain’s equalizer, suggesting it should have been disallowed due to an offside position.
“It’s difficult to talk just about this offside position, but if you want to have my opinion, it is a clear offside,” Sagnol said. “If Dumfries was offside against France, this was 10-times offside today.
Regarding future prospects, Sagnol emphasized the importance of reflecting on past achievements before thinking ahead to the 2026 World Cup.
“Sometimes you have to take your time to look back at what you’ve done,” he said. “We can sit down in peace and quiet and be very happy with the last year because the evolution of the team has been absolutely fantastic.
I’m very proud of what the players have done in the last months and now it is the end of the journey but I’m sure the next one will also be very exciting,” he said.
Georgia faced Spain in the round of 16 of the UEFA EURO 2024 on June 30 in Cologne, Germany. Despite scoring the first goal, Georgia ultimately lost to Spain with a final score of 1:4, bidding a dignified farewell to the European Championship.
