GD MP: Venice Commission tells Georgia to disregard Constitution's passage on marriage, people think other way
“They tell us to remove the Constitution’s passage on a marriage that is a union of a man and a woman instead of imposing restrictions. The Georgian population thinks the other way,” said Beka Davituliani, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party MP.
The GD MP remarked on the Venice Commission’s Opinion on the draft constitutional law on Protecting Family Values and Minors.
“Everyone should know that this law only refers to not allowing certain scenes in TV broadcasts and setting an age limit of 18+ in cinemas. It also refers to disallowing similar scenes in children’s literature. The Venice Commission has a bad attitude. It is a sensitive issue.
They tell us to remove the Constitution’s passage on a marriage that is a union of a man and a woman instead of imposing restrictions, saying restrictions should not work in the country. We and the Georgian population do not think like that,” he said.
The Venice Commission published its Opinion on the draft constitutional law on Protecting Family Values and Minors adopted at its 139th Plenary Session on June 21-22.
The Venice Commission recommends the Georgian government modify the draft constitutional law in a way that allows for the legal recognition of same-sex couples.
