GD member wishes Medical Council to recommend ex-president to call off hunger strike
The penitentiary system will respond to the conclusion of the Medical Group established by Public Defender, said Shalva Papuashvili, a member of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party.
“We would like to hear that is the medical service that Mikheil Saakashvili needs and cannot get in the N18 prison infirmary,” Papuashvili said.
According to the majority MP, instead of studying the possibility of post-hunger striking rehabilitation, the council talks about how to manage the hunger-striking prisoner and this needs his transfer to a civic clinic.
“Saakashvili declares that he will call off hunger strike as soon as he is transferred to the civic hospital. This means that the recommendations will be irrelevant because the ex-president will require recovery,” Papuashvili said.
“It would be better for the Council to recommend Mikheil Saakashvili to stop hunger strike instead of holding discussions on how to manage the situation,” Shalva Papuashvili claimed.
Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of the Georgian Dream (GD) party tagged the medical council report as “fake.”
“Imagine there is a follow up to this ‘fake report’, which is the transfer of Mikheil Saakashvili to a civilian clinic, and this is the scenario we fear – in this case, this next ‘fake’ turns into something that could be the direct responsibility of the ombudsman and specific doctors,” Kobakhidze told reporters.
The Group of Physicians established by the Public Defender published a report on November 17 where it recommended that Saakashvili should continue medical treatment at a multi-functional hospital.
Jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili has been on a hunger strike since October 1.
