GD Mdinaradze says admitting that donor money spending on political activities proves need for transparency
They acknowledge that donor funds are spent on political activities, which is a clear admission of illegitimate money circulation. The man directly admits that politics will face problems, said Mamuka Mdinaradze, the leader of the parliamentary majority, in response to Levan Berdzenishvili’s remarks.
Mdinaradze commented on Berdzenishvili’s statement, where he suggested: “If Foreign Influence bill is passed, it would essentially mean that elections cannot be held in Georgia. It is because half of the political establishment, the entire NGO sector and others would be found in the ranks of organizations that are 20% financed by foreign entities.”
In his response, Mdinaradze emphasized that individuals who have nothing to hide should have no issue disclosing their financial activities.
He dismissed claims that the transparency initiative targets specific countries, asserting that it applies universally to all foreign funding sources.
“Our legislation applies universally to Russia or any other nation. It’s about ensuring transparency. They have no obligation other than to fill out the declaration. Their admission that foreign funds are being channelled into politics underscores the need for transparency,” stated Mdinaradze.
The draft Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence was initiated in the Parliament of Georgia, and the amendments will be discussed further in the Bureau session next Monday.
The Georgian Dream party stated that the draft law presented in parliament this year is identical to the one proposed last year, except for one change. Instead of using the term ‘foreign agent,’ the new version uses the phrase ‘an organization carrying out the interests of a foreign power’.
