For Georgia's Liluashvili: Chorchana episode only case where Georgia’s territorial interests were protected without escalation
Beka Liluashvili, a member of the Gakharia for Georgia party, stated that the Chorchana incident was the only case in Georgia’s history where the country’s territorial interests were successfully defended and the creeping occupation halted without military escalation.
“This was the only instance, during Giorgi Gakharia’s tenure as Minister of Internal Affairs, where the national and territorial interests of Georgia were protected through the coordinated efforts of all relevant agencies—without the risk of escalation,” said Liluashvili.
He claimed the current investigation into the case by the Prosecutor’s Office and the Parliamentary Investigative Commission is politically motivated and aimed at persecuting Gakharia.
“We clearly remember the threat made against Giorgi Gakharia and his team, followed by an organized ambush on Gakharia in Batumi, which was conducted by armed individuals who were surveilling the situation. The investigation into that attack has been inactive for five months. Key evidence, including surveillance footage, remains concealed. The recent summons to the commission appears to be laying the groundwork for criminal and political persecution. This is a clear example of political pressure, highlighting who Georgian Dream truly sees as a threat,” Liluashvili stated.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia is investigating the 2019 opening of a police checkpoint near the village of Chorchana.
