For Georgia party proposes amending presidential election procedure in Constitution

The For Georgia party initiated amending the procedure for electing the president in Georgia’s Constitution.

Beka Liluashvili, speaking at a press conference, stated that the party proposes a return to the previous rule, where the citizens elect the president directly rather than through an electoral college.

The party argues that direct election by citizens enhances the legitimacy and independence of the president.

“Ivanishvili addressed the issue of imbalances in the government, acknowledging the problem of unlimited and uncontrolled power within the Georgian Dream government. However, instead of proposing a constitutional solution, he suggested himself as the controller of the government. Even if we assume that Bidzina Ivanishvili aims to balance the power within his GD, in a democratic system, one person can’t be the guarantor of the state’s stability,” he said.

For Georgia party calls on the parliamentary majority to launch the constitutional amendment process during the spring session.

“In a democratic framework, the preservation of constitutional institutions with high legitimacy is crucial. Therefore, we call on the honorary GD chair and the parliamentary majority to initiate work on constitutional amendments during the spring session. Specifically, to consider the return to the direct election of the head of state, the president, by the citizens of Georgia,” he added.
