FM Aurescu: Romania stands by 2008 Bucharest Summit declaration

Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu on Wednesday said “Romania stands by the Bucharest Summit declaration in 2008 which mentioned that both Georgia and Ukraine will become members of the alliance when the conditions would be met.”

Before the meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest, Aurescu told Georgian media outlets that “not only symbolic, but we have very warm feelings with Georgia and the Georgians, because we are very close in mind, we are close in purpose.”

“We have always supported the European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Georgia. We stand by the Bucharest Summit declaration in 2008 which mentioned that both Georgia and Ukraine will become members of the alliance when the conditions would be met. We very much support this goal. That is why we have recently increased the level of relationship between Romania and Georgia at the level of strategic partnership during the visit of the President of Georgia to Bucharest,” Aurescu stated.

Bucharest, Romania is hosting a meeting of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) at the level of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on 29-30 November 2022. The meeting is chaired by the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg.
