EU Integration Committee Chair says 31 MEPs cannot obstruct Georgia's EU accession
The letter of 31 members of the European Parliament cannot obstruct Georgia’s application for EU accession, said Maka Botchorishvili, Chairwoman of the parliamentary European Integration Committee.
Maka Botchorishvili echoed the letter of 31 MEPs addressed to Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, urging him to suspend EU candidate country status to Georgia and review EU financing to the country.
“We have seen the EP resolution and 31 MEPs could have expressed their viewpoints in this resolution. I don’t know what they have to say beyond the resolution. However, it is an additional tool for the MEPs to somehow assist the protest wave and create additional news in Georgia.
I would rather ask whose interests similar wishes serve and how they serve the interests of the Georgian state and people when the government and people, the will of whom it represents, have declared their wish to join the European Union.
Georgia’s application for EU accession is not a joke. It is the application made consciously by the Georgian government based, of course, on the will of the Georgian people, and the letter of 31 members of the European Parliament cannot obstruct it,” she said.
