EU Ambassador to Georgia: We see people on streets. We are shocked by violence
“Let me first say very loud and clear in the name of the European Union that we see people on the streets. We hear their voices. We are shocked by the violence,” EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski said on Monday.
Ambassador Herczynski deemed it “absolutely unacceptable,” pledging the EU to stand with the people of Georgia, “who want a better future for them and for their families who want Georgia to become a member of the European Union.”
“We condemn any violence directed at anyone. Violence should not take place. And especially when it comes to journalists, all of them should be allowed to work freely and to do their job without violence and without intimidation,” he noted.
“I was last week in Brussels. I had the chance to speak to 27 EU ambassadors. I also met with my new counterparts. There was a change of leadership in EU institutions. Coming Monday, on the 16th of December, foreign ministers of the European Union will meet and discuss Georgia. Georgia will be again discussed at the end of next week at the level of EU heads of state and government.
What is going on in Georgia, the level of violence, the level of brutality is absolutely unacceptable. People can have different opinions. This is part of every democracy, but violence brutality is absolutely unacceptable, and let’s see what will happen next week.
I think that most of us in EU capitals as well as in EU institutions have reached the stage in which we need to act. HRVP Kaja Kallas has said that there will be consequences. Let’s see what consequences will be agreed by member states on Monday,” the EU Ambassador added.
