EC Spokesperson on enlargement: We are not focused on dates, but on reforms
We are not focused on dates, but on reforms, European Commission Spokesperson Dana Spinant said on Tuesday, in response to a journalist’s question about EU enlargement.
Spinat noted that enlargement is a political priority of the European Commission and this is a merit-based process.
However, Spinant did not comment on Charles Michel’s statement that the EU should be ready to receive new members by 2030.
“We are focused on working very closely with candidate countries to prepare them for accession, depending on where they are. We are focused on negotiations, on reforming their economies or various policies,” said Dana Spinant.
On Monday, Charles Michel mentioned the year 2030 as a date when further expansion of the European Union could occur.
