Culture Ministry makes initial decisions on Gelati monastery complex

Georgian Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry decided to research the roof arrangement technology of the Gelati monastery complex (including the composition and quality of the grout), to take samples and examine the laid red glazed tile, and to develop a drainage arrangement project as soon as possible.

The ministry made these initial decisions based on a consensus after two meetings held by the Culture Minister Tea Tsulukiani, her deputies and professional architects-restorers.

The meeting attended by representatives of the National Agency for the Protection of Monuments unanimously concluded that the so-called white tile used for roofing approximately 800 square meters does not meet the minimum requirements and must be replaced.

“This work will be associated with quite large sums of money, which is unfortunate for the country’s budget and a small budget Culture Ministry,” the minister and invited experts concluded.

The actual roof tiling of Georgia’s Gelati Monastery Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was damaged due to rainwater leakage back in 2020.
