Court rebuffs POG request for arrest of 14-year-old girl's mother killed in eastern Georgia

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia (POG) on Wednesday said the police apprehended the uncle of a 14-year-old girl who was murdered on October 6 in Lambalo village in eastern Georgia by a man who had reportedly kidnapped and killed her.

According to the POG, Rustavi City Court rebuffed the Office’s request for the arrest of the victim’s mother. The body charged both with forced marriage and failure to report crime.

“The investigation found the abductor had kidnapped the minor in the summer, brought her to the village of Lambalo in the Sagarejo municipality, and limited her free movement.

The minor managed to escape, called her mother on a stranger’s phone, and reported her kidnapping, which was also reported to her uncle.

Although the minor’s mother and uncle knew about the serious crime committed against the 14-year-old girl, they believed the minor did not have the right to express free will and make a choice, did not report the crime to the police and forced the child to live with the abductor,” the POG stated.

The police had already detained a 27-year-old man for the intentional murder of the 14-year-old. The crime is punishable by up to 20 years in jail or life in prison.

The Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that it was enforcing the “strictest criminal law policy in cases of this category,” adding that “all those charged in the case would be held accountable to the full extent of the law for the gravest crime committed.”
