Catholicos-Patriarch congratulates Georgians on upcoming Independence Day

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, on Sunday, congratulated the Georgian citizens on the upcoming Independence Day.

“This event took place in 1918, preceded by the recognition of the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church. With these two most important facts, Georgia regained the sovereignty of our church and country over 100 years ago and has become an independent, self-governing state,” Ilia II stated.

Catholicos-Patriarch noted that “our people, especially young people must know the history of those who sacrificed their lives for Georgia against the Soviet atheist regime, as this is the basis of our past our independence, our present.”
