Bidzina Ivanishvili: Recalling centuries-old brotherhood between Georgians and Ossetians to pave way for rebuilding trust
Former Prime Minister and Honorary Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, delivered a speech at pre-election regional meeting in Gori, Shida Kartli region.
Bidzina Ivanishvili stated that the August 2008 war was not the desire of either the Georgian or Ossetian people. Ivanishvili emphasized that once the instigators of the conflict are held accountable for their actions, the process of rebuilding relations will begin.
He mentioned that after the October 26 elections, the perpetrators of the war, particularly those responsible for undermining the Georgian-Ossetian brotherhood, would face the strictest legal consequences. Ivanishvili expressed confidence that this would pave the way for an apology and reconciliation, especially for the harm caused by the National Movement during the conflict.
“I assure you that the Georgian Nuremberg process will take place soon and will be a crucial step toward our reconciliation. Georgians have a remarkable ability to confront reality, regardless of how difficult it may be. After 12 years of continuous peace in Georgia, I am more convinced than ever that acknowledging our mistakes and recalling the centuries-old brotherhood between Georgians and Ossetians will pave the way for rebuilding trust between people on both sides of the divide.
After the October 26 elections, when the instigators of the war are held accountable and those responsible for the destruction of the Georgian-Ossetian brotherhood face the harshest legal consequences, we will find the strength to apologize for the suffering endured by our Ossetian sisters and brothers in 2008, caused by the traitorous National Movement.
As forgiveness is one of the most fundamental principles of our shared Christian faith, I am confident that the fratricidal conflict imposed on our people by Georgia’s enemies will conclude with historical mutual forgiveness and genuine reconciliation,” Ivanishvili stated.
He concluded by urging citizens to participate in the upcoming elections to make their voices heard.
